When Is the Best Time to Visit Morocco for Trekking?
Choosing the right season can make the difference between a magical summit day and a miserable slog through snow or scorching heat. Mount Toubkal and the High Atlas Mountains are climbable almost year-round, but each season offers a very different experience.
Spring (March to May)
Spring is one of the most popular times to trek in the Atlas Mountains. Wildflowers bloom in the valleys, temperatures are mild, and the days are long enough for comfortable hiking. Snow can still linger on the higher slopes of Toubkal into April, so crampons and an ice axe may be required on summit day.
Summer (June to August)
Summer brings long daylight hours and completely snow-free trails on Toubkal, making it the easiest technical season to summit. However, temperatures in the valleys and at lower elevation can be very hot, so early starts are essential. This is a great season for first-time trekkers.
Autumn (September to November)
Many guides consider autumn the best all-round season: stable weather, comfortable daytime temperatures, cooler nights, and beautiful golden light over the valleys. The first snow usually doesn't appear on the summit until late October or November.
Winter (December to February)
Winter transforms Toubkal into a serious mountaineering objective. Full snow and ice cover the upper mountain, and a summit attempt requires crampons, ice axe, and experience with winter mountaineering techniques, or a guide who can provide them. Winter treks reward experienced hikers with dramatic snow-capped scenery and near-empty trails.
